“OUTSTANDING“
This is a wonderful disc containig musiv by Ligeti from a wide chronological range in exhilarating performances, recorded to perfection.
The Violinconcerto, the latest work on the recording, is as putty in the hands of Benjamin Schmid. He clearly not only relishes ist quirkiness but understands ist moments of fleeting beauty as intrinsic to its structure, so the „Aria“ that begins the second mouvement, for example, is not treated as a sentimental intrusion into an otherwise iconoclastic work but a part oft he total narrative. There is a tremendous maturity about the performance (including the ocarinas), and soloist and orchestra are as a seamless whole; in fact, there is a very chamber-like quality to the performance that brings out a tremendous amount of detail in the score that i don´t hear so clearly in the otherwise excellent recording by Saschko Gawriloff for Pierre Boulez.

BENJAMIN SCHMID: LIGETIS NAGEL AUF DEN KOPF GETROFFEN
Hannu Lintu ist seit mehr als 20 Jahren ein Qualitätsgarant, wenn es um Neue Musik und klassische Musikmoderne geht. Mit Orchestern aus seiner Heimat Finnland legte er bei Ondine und Naxos teils herausragende Aufnahmen vor. Zu diesen hinzugekommen ist nun eine repräsentative Ligeti-Auswahl in glänzenden Interpretationen. Das Violinkonzert mit dem österreichischen Geigen-As Benjamin Schmid bildet dabei den Höhepunkt. Aber auch das aus Kubriks „2001“-Film bekannte „Atmosphères“ ist vertreten. Lintu zeigt, wie hellsichtig er diese Musik durchschaut. Und so interpretiert er Ligeti als Musikrevolutionär, der im Kern Romantiker geblieben ist – und trifft damit den Nagel auf den Kopf! Ligeti wird hier so schön musiziert, wie man es sich überhaupt nur wünschen kann. Ich könnte mir auch kaum eine bessere CD vorstellen, um in die nach wie vor hochgradig spannende Klanglichkeit des Komponisten hineinzuschnuppern.
